I was getting on the bypass in Kitty today and I saw an escort car with lights and red flags pass me and then a tractor trailer rig, with what was obviously a bridge component, going south. The piece must have been 2 hundred feet long or longer. It was huge and going to Alligator river bridge I guess. Seems a strange way to get pieces to the construction site - through KDH and Nags Head.
@Tim-OBX, I'm not a civil engineer (but my Dad was!). They are now driving the final pilings on the East end and it probably makes more sense to deliver them to the East side of the project. Just a dumb guess.
@KHbiker This thing was BIG and taking it through KDH and the burp belt must have been something to see. I get the deliver from the east, but if they do half that will be hundreds of these pieces over the roads? Why not float in on barges? I have to g to Raleigh Tuesdays for the next 3-4 weeks so I can watch the progress. It looked like all the pilings were in 2 weeks ago when I went past and now the big pieces are being placed now.
When the Basnight Bridge was under construction, I would often see those long concrete structures heading south on the bypass.
