Hey y’all, just a heads up — since they’re not doing the regular Dare Day in Manteo this year, Wanchese Marina is putting on Dare Day Dockside this Saturday (June 6) from 10 to 5. It’s free and sounds pretty low-key and family friendly. They’re gonna have food trucks, a kids area with rides and inflatables, a fishing clinic for the little ones, a petting zoo, dolphin tours for like $5, and some local vendors. Plus they’re leaning into the seafood and fishing side of things since it’s Wanchese.

This reminded me that the Soundside FunFair is back this week in Nags Head. It runs Thursday through Sunday 530 - 11pm. Classic carnival stuff.

The Rogallo Kite Festival is coming up June 12–13 at Jockey’s Ridge. They fly these giant kites (some are like 30–100 feet). Pretty cool to watch, especially with the dunes and water.

Doors 6:30PM, show 7pm Sunday, June 21 – An Evening with The String Cheese Incident Roanoke Island Festival Park, Manteo. Doors 5:00 PM, show 6:45 PM. This is the official kickoff of the Live From OBX 2026 Summer Concert Series (also Father’s Day and first day of summer). Jam-band legends mixing rock, bluegrass, funk, etc... Tickets $53 $1 per ticket supports the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
Juneteenth Statue unveiling on Saturday, June 20, 2026 11am. Historic Jarvisburg Colored School, Jarvisburg, NC (Currituck County). "Who Was John Jasper White (“Currituck Jack”)? This is a powerful and lesser-known story of a local African American hero from the Revolutionary War era: John Jasper White was an enslaved mariner in Currituck County, owned by Henry White. In February 1780, he was part of the crew on the schooner Polly, which was sailing from Currituck Sound down to Charleston carrying supplies. The ship was captured by a British privateer called the Fame. The American crew members were taken prisoner. Jack tried to escape and was tied to the mast as punishment. He eventually convinced the British that he was a skilled sailor and cook. They untied him and gave him more freedom on the ship. Jack then helped the American prisoners retake the vessel from the British, successfully reclaiming the ship. After this act of bravery, Jack was able to purchase his freedom. He chose the name John Jasper White — combining elements from the adventure (including names of fellow crew members). He later owned his own ship, got married, had two sons, and became a respected member of the
