Hi, just found this forum, after the loss of the obxconnection. I had a question, about route 460 out of Petersburg, but after looking at the post from danjw2, it was answered, I'll be using it. After coming to the obx since 1989, I've always used the gps route that took me from Richmond to the obx. After last week, I'll never do it again. By the way, cool video.
f you’re interested you can view the linked video which I recorded with a tablet mounted on the dash. The full video starts in Fredericksburg and ends up in OBX… it’s close to 4 hours long and probably quite boring for just about anybody. However, there are timestamps in the desciption and the 4th timestamp (1:15:15) is the start of travelling on US-460 from I-295. You’ll see that 460 is 4 lanes with speeds from 55 mph down to 35 mph. The speed drops because you do travel thru several small towns. The road is in good condition. Traffic tends to be much less than that experienced on I-64 from Richmond to Norfolk. We used to travel 64 but I got tired of the heavy traffic and the near misses. I’m too old for the white-knuckle stress. Also, because of the lower traffic volume on 460, the total driving time (in my experience) is not much longer than 64. https://youtu.be/YXRn3uwaLZ8 One warning – obey the speed limits. Most of these towns have a robust attitude when it comes to speeders. Even if the locals seemingly ignore the lower speed limits I don’t tempt fate with out-of-state plates.
Thanks I will watch it. When I get bored, I actually like watching these trip videos, kinda relaxing. These last 3 return through construction were nightmares, even at 3am. Thanks for the info.
When we lived in Fredericksburg and traveled here to our rental house, in 1991-2000, we would often get bored with I95-I64-Rt168. 460 offered more things to see and places to slow down and look around. The interstates are like NASCAR race tracks these days. The only two problems with 460 are the police are everywhere and it can be dangerous with those two lanes and many traffic lights, so be vigilant.

This is not to be construed as political. But people should really look into getting a Tesla. We bought one last year with their full self driving supervised. We took it to PA for Thanksgiving, 650 miles round trip. At the end we had only driven about 10 miles ourselves. I believe it's safer then people. And makes for a super relaxing drive.
I have one and am looking forward to watching movies on extended trips. Probably not this year but next year for sure.

Yes, I prefer 460 to I64. However I call it an "Old fashioned" road in that there is no median for safety at all. Just 2 yellow lines. So I am always in the right lane unless passing. When I used to visit friends in Roanoke I used that road all the time. I love to stop at the Virginia Diner for breakfast!
@KHbiker Exactly right! And I enjoy the VA Diner too! I like to stop here and there and always have to stop at Adam's Country Store for a sandwich or to shop and stretch my legs. Picked up a hushpuppy mix there recently I have to tear into and cook at the beach. It's 50/50 in my circle of family and friends whether to take 460 from Roanoke or come up through Roanoke Island having to get through I-40 through Raleigh. Summer drives to the OBX usually for us mean coming up past Manteo (rt 64) to avoid all the back ups around The Border Station at the VA line. Have sat in the car way too long at that area.
If the vehicle you drive has adaptive cruise control and lane assistance (most do) you should use it. I find it reduces driving fatigue considerably because it manages speed and following distance for me, freeing up some of my attention used while driving. Driving in traffic that is not maintaining a constant speed can be a drain if you're not using ACC.
