I think that a lot of drunk drivers are great drunk drivers until they aren't, and kill someone. I am a supporter of law enforcement getting them off the road. But I also think probable cause for a pullover seems like a reasonable expectation. My understanding is they are checking for car registration.
CnC, I kinda see where you're coming from. These checkpoints are touted as "license" checks but you know they come up close to your window to sniff the odors. Then suddenly they switch to "DUI check". So a situation where you'd make it home just fine, like hundreds of times before, now you're a drunk. Sober drivers kill people too (or cause bad accidents). That accident at Ekner and the bypass recently, lady ran the red light (it wasn't yellow). Was she staring at her phone? And the guy she hit, most of us locals now know to wait and look very carefully left and right after your light turns green. Rant over.
As a 3 time victim of drunk drivers I could care less if they have checkpoints. The outer banks has this long tradition of doing absolutely nothing to drunk drivers until they finally kill someone ( Mellissa Marvin, Nicholas Meeks)

@Craic'n Crabs ...these checkpoints are typically very regulated...so they will not infringe on anyone's rights...unfortunately i believe they are necessary...and do protect the public...just my opinion...
