Yeah, I'm beating this story to death and a couple of you on this current board know the story already, but I love the story as much as I love the hobby of searching for sea glass and finding really old sea glass. Just very special to me and perhaps an explanation as to what looked like a piece of road asphalt I was holding up in my "Howdy Do" pic to this new OBX Forum last week. Took this pic in the beach cottage two weeks ago with the chunk. I was flower shopping at the nursery in Frisco two weeks ago and at check out was chatting with the nice employee about walking the beach and searching for sea glass and we thoroughly enjoyed our convo. I proceeded to tell her that I had found a couple of pieces of pirate sea glass in recent years and that I had read and learned about what it was from an IFP article entitled "A Beachcomber's View.". Well, the employee was the columnist herself, Ms. Kristin Hissong, and she jumped up and said that she was the author. We hugged and she asked me to come outside with her to her car. She pulled out a pirate sea glass chunk and stuffed it into my Mary Poppins purse and insisted that I take it! Wonderful lady and I almost cried on the way back to BB. I mailed her a special shell necklace this week as a thank you. (Which will never add up to what she did for me!!!) Sunsets and sea glass are obviously my thing in connection to the Outer Banks, so really a huge thrill to me. I loved meeting her and think highly of her writing and she lives in Frisco so basically my neighbor.

Just put the finishing touches on the shadow box for it. Fabric in the back covered by a piece of pink sea fan I found goodness knows where. Had a plethora of shells to choose from to mount the sea glass and found a whelk with a hole to hold it tight. Glass Plus spray on the outside glass. Sprinkled some HI sand I had to knock out of some shells and Ta-Da! Hahahahhaha! Sand everywhere!!!!!!!
Wow this is all so amazing! Can't wait to get out there to do some shelling. I have definitely passed over some smaller pieces of "asphalt" in the past and now I will be sure to look close. Great post - I learned a lot!
@SassyGirl Oh, good, Sassygirl. Really cool info from her. I found one small one that when held up to the light, showed lions standing in a row with what looked like crowns on their heads. Now, you'll be picking up every piece of dark gravel you see, just like me! But, you never know.
HAHAHAHA! Just looked at the shadow box pic and it looks like a fish in an aquarium with spikes on his back (reflection from the fan) swimming towards the back of the box. Can't stop laughing. Tears streaming down my face... Oh well.....HAHA!!!!!! I'll fix him.
A few pieces attached of the "pirate" sea glass I have found on HI. Had one other that I gave to my son's fiancee. (They just got engaged!!!! Love her so much... he put a ring on it!) One of them I held up to the light to see the olive color. Pic beside it shows how dark it is. 2nd one is just shown on the truck tailgate. You can see the olive color on the sides of that one barely. The 3rd one shows the "lion". The "lion" one was black looking on the sand as well.
