I used to dig holes on the beach for my boys when they were little. I never left it unattended and always filled it up before leaving. Frankly it was probably the only good exercise I'd get on vacation. That being said this is ridiculous.
Driving 20+ miles one day a week at 6am looking for sea turtles allows you to find lots of holes. Some are pretty big. Why would anyone want to do this??
When you need a ladder to get out, your hole is too big. I never dug holes like this, but I did dig "kiddie pools" well below the high tide line. A foot or two deep max. Kids loved playing in them and the water would get warm quick.
@Tim-OBX Wow. Very dangerous for people walking at night.
And every year, some where on the east coast, one of these giant holes caves in and someone gets killed. "It's not going to happen to me" syndrome.
@J4yDubs I did this as well. Always below the tide line, big enough for the kids but not too big.

...i fell into one of those at night walking the beach in kdh...twisted knee=ruined vaca...not a big fan....
All of those holes are huge! Can imagine the tools that were needed to sign them. So dangerous for those walking the beaches at night too. We used to take our kids ghost crabbing.
