Video of my son water skiing on the Pamlico in July 2024. Actually, he was wake boarding. The sound was soooo choppy that day I didn't dare try. I bought a used slalom water ski this winter in an online auction from an auction house in my area and this Grandma is gonna give it a go. It's been a few years since I've slalom skied and that was on Smith MTN Lake. Usually just go the easy route with the two skis at the beach. Definitely have to pick a pancake Sound day though to try it. The funny thing is, I don't see many people at all skiing in the Sound. Maybe two people a summer. Don't understand that. Shark thoughts??!! Our next door neighbors in BB taught their 8 year old last year to ski and it's nice to watch her. Up on the first try. Can't stop her now.
@BentMtn I think it’s the depth that keeps skiers away. I learned to water ski at a young age on a river that was rarely more than 5’ deep. The tails of your skis would be on the rocky bottom when you were waiting for the boat to pull you up. Wiping out in shallow water can be a bit hazardous too.
@BentMtn I've never seen a single water skier in the Currituck sound. When we bought in 2007 not really any boating - at least not what you'd see in Jersey. You couldn't even rent a boat to take the family out. Things have changed for sure but still never see skiers.
@Craic'n Crabs - It is strange. You would think people would be all over the place skiing. Glad I just didn't imagine it. @Squid - Yeah, the depth could be the reason people shy away from skiing there. Nothing like wiping out on a sandbar. The boat's depth finder helps farther out in the sound in my case. Usually about eight feet. Images of John Candy skiing in "The Great Outdoors" movie come to mind.... Thanks for the info, y'all.
