I have a friend of mine who I grew up with and her father was the last steam Train master for the Norfolk and Western trainyard in Roanoke VA where the J Class engines were built in the 40's. He was responsible for building the last (and probably some of the prettiest steam engines ever made) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_and_Western_Class_J_(1941) as a FYI engine 611 of the J class still runs to this day for steam excursions. His photo albums he took during construction that she has should be in a museum and I suspect someday they will be If you ever want to get an idea of the pictures look at a copy of "Portrait of the Rails" by Don Ball that came out in 1972 many of his candid pictures of steam engines were taken from the same photographers that did the pictures to document the construction of those engines.
@Alexy Love trains real or models! Have very close friend still engineering with Southern and so does nephew. Uncle, father-in-law started schaffers crossing n&w and retired with ns as well as other close friends-long history so i have seen alot of trains in my lifetime. Really miss the cabooses and the waves at the crossings here. I still hear the whistles from house for random trains that still come to cement plant here -nothing like it imo::flag-us::
@Alexy - Can't be proven this bell is a J class (well, maybe with research and it's probably just one out of the shops at decommission time), but my father in law got this bell from N&W at his retirement and said it was, but who knows. He's been gone since 1983 and drove the 611 plus many others. I used to ring it to call in the kids when we had a farm and have it now on the MTN.
@BentMtn it very well may of come from one of them. 3 of them were scrapped at Portsmouth Ohio in 1959/1960 but I believe they were stripped down in the Roanoke yards before being moved under tow to Ohio for final breaking.
@Alexy -- Thanks, Alexy. He had someone in one of the shops make the cradle for it...probably Shaffer's. Just don't have the whole story and I really should do further research. I appreciate all of the good history that you have on this.
