Georgia (GA) Species: Primarily southern flounder (and others) Season: Year-round Bag Limit: 15 fish per person per day Minimum Size: 12 inches total length (TL) Source: GA DNR Coastal Resources Division South Carolina (SC) Species: Southern, summer, and Gulf flounder Season: Year-round (no closed season) Bag Limit: 5 fish per person per day, not to exceed 10 per boat per day (applies to hook-and-line or gig) Minimum Size: 16 inches TL Source: SC DNR / eregulations North Carolina (NC) NC has very restrictive flounder rules under the Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan (rebuilding plan). General possession is often unlawful outside specific short seasons announced by proclamation. Check current proclamations on the NC DMF website, as rules are dynamic. General Flounder (all species, coastal/joint/inland waters): Typically closed or limited to short windows. A fall recreational season is set for Sept. 1–14, 2026 (1 fish per person per day, 15" TL minimum). Gulf Flounder (specific ocean waters): Short season March 9–22, 2026 in Atlantic Ocean state waters from the north end of Portsmouth Island (south of Ocracoke Inlet) to the NC/SC line.
@Beach Guy I hear ya, why have any season at all? Is there that much more pressure in NC than anywhere else? I just don't get it. As a side note, I bought flounder back in April... a pickup order so I never saw it until it was unwrapped at home. 1-1/2 pounds... it was 9 very small fillets.
@Greg - I'm on the beach now just finishing a walk and talked to a fella fishing that had just caught a flounder and of course had to throw it back. He just shook his head like what the heck. I've seen him a couple of times this week and he is determined. Pretty sad.
