I was tossing out stuff I have not touched in 10 years or more and I came up on a couple photos of the Perfect Storm in Oct 1991. We had just built the house on the beach road across from the Bel Aire Motel in June. We had stayed in the house only 2 weeks that summer - then this happened. A neighbor called me in the evening and told me they are having a bad nor east'r and the Bel Aire has been destroyed. 😢 The Bel Aire owner tore it down and built a new house on two of the 3 lots leaving one as the septic area and it was across from my house, so no house to block my view. It took two days of digging to clear the driveway. No damage to my house - lucky me.

That was a real mess. My fishing buddy and I were there that week and didn't leave. We had a top floor 3-BR unit with ocean view at the Outer Banks Beach Club and plenty of beer, water, and food. And bait. The parking lots filled with ankle-deep water but that was about it. Come to think of it, that was probably ocean water that flooded the beach road through the drainage pipes/stormwater outfalls. I particularly remember the low gray clouds and the reflected flashes of the exploding transformers on the poles. The good old days.
I was not happy with my wife for making us buy that house, but I soon got over it a few years later when I had it appraised. Now with beach nourishment there has not been any overwash since I sold it in 2016 ---- lucky buyer!
